Sermons of the clergy of Tambov diocese in the late 19th – early 20th centuries as a means of publicizing and catechesis

The article examines sermons of the clergy of Tambov diocese of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries from the standpoint of their use in parishes as material for public talks, missionary and spiritual and educational work. The publication of the above-mentioned topics in the “Tambov Diocesan Gazette” in the specified period served as the material for the research. The author examines illustrative examples of teaching people in faith and piety that took place in history of Tambov diocese, and also conducts a problematic and thematic analysis of homiletic works of representatives of the clergy, which makes it possible to identify most pressing issues of pastoral practice. The article also provides a list of publications in the “Tambov Diocesan Gazette” of the pre-revolutionary period, containing materials of catechism and catechetical conversations at parishes of Tambov diocese of the late 19th century, which remain relevant at present. The author comes to the conclusion that it is quite expedient to use not only the actual content of the pastoral instructions of this period, but also to borrow some methods and techniques of presenting doctrinal truths to people preparing for the sacrament of Baptism and taking their first steps in the Church, as well as methods for revealing and exposure of vices and delusions prevalent in society.
