The theme of spiritual awakening of people in the exhortations of the Holy Martyr Metropolitan Kirill (Smirnov) addressed to the Tambov flock during World War I (1915)

The article presents a problematic and thematic review of the sermons of Saint Kirill (Smirnov) during his archpastoral service at the Tambov diocese, which touch upon current issues of the spiritual state of society during the First World War, and provides a moral and theological analysis. The research material is based on the “Reviews of the Churches, Monasteries and Schools of the Diocese by His Grace Kirill, Bishop of Tambov and Shatsk”, conducted in 1915 and published in the “Tambov Diocesan Gazette” in 1916. During his visits to numerous monasteries and parishes of the Tambov diocese, His Grace Kirill paid special attention in his sermons to the spiritual awakening of the people and the establishment of truly Christian relationships in society, which was of particular importance in wartime conditions. The study revealed the main aspects and motives of Saint Kirill’s sermons: the need for the people to repent, so that God would show His mercy and grant victory to our Fatherland; social care for wounded soldiers, for the families of the dead as a manifestation of true Christian love; the fight against passions, primarily the passion for drinking, and counteracting the moral decay of society. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that Saint Kirill’s sermons, delivered in 1915, are distinguished by a deep connection with the spiritual experience of the Church of Christ and are imbued with the archpastor’s sincere desire for his contemporaries to move on to spiritual work and begin to build their personal and social lives on the basis of the Gospel commandments.
