Saint Paisios of Mount Athos on the problems of modern civilization

The article presents an important aspect of the spiritual heritage of Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, connected with the understanding of the main problems of modern civilization. The author focuses on the fact that for an objective assessment of the phenomena of the modern world, it is necessary to resort to the spiritual experience of holy people, whose source of wisdom is Divine grace. The words and admonitions of Saint Paisios of Mount Athos about the moral state of modern man and family life, about spiritual awakening and the struggle with passions served as empirical material for the study. Saint Paisios considered the main reason for the unhappiness of people to be their distance from the Source of life – God and their unwillingness to live according to the immutable Gospel laws. The accelerating pace of life, concern for material wellbeing and comfort, the desire by all means to make his life easier, according to Reverend Paisios, do not allow a person to cognize themselves and take care of
their inner order. As for the main reasons for the manifestation of negative qualities in people, they include lack of proper upbringing in the family, as well as the imperfection of the Western education system, which is far from spiritual enlightenment. Saint Paisios saw a particular danger in pedagogical approaches that undermine the authority of parents among children, thereby destroying traditional family foundations. In conclusion, the author claims that for spiritual healing a modern person
needs to go a long way in order to gain strong and unhypocritical faith, strong and sacrificial love, undoubted and firm hope in God and ardent heartfelt prayer.
