Intertextuality in the first word of St. Theophan the Recluse about fire in Tambov province

The article presents the experience of applying methods of intertextual analysis to the homiletic work of St. Theophan the Recluse, which is part of the cycle «Nine words on the occasion of the fires in Tambov and the province of Tambov» (1860). The author convincingly proves that such studies are able to reveal the deep semantic connections of patristic works and contribute to the correct perception of the Christian doctrine by different generations. Consideration of intertextual connections of this sermon with the books of the Old and New Testaments made it possible to trace the logical connection of the methods and images used by the saint to reveal its main idea - to determine the spiritual causes of the calamity that befell the province, as well as to motivate the Tambov flock to repentance and correct life. In the structure of the archpastoral word, the author of the article singled out two compositional and semantic parts: ascertaining and edifying (polemical). In each of them, a detailed analysis of intertextual means was carried out, the internal connections of integrated elements were revealed, which made it possible to expand the boundaries of perception of the theological text in a cultural and historical context and to feel the spiritual atmosphere of the era in which the sermon was delivered, as well as to discover the main sources of spiritual reflections of St. Theophan in the process of creating a word. The author comes to the conclusion that it is advisable to conduct intertextual studies in relation to other theological, homiletic and epistolary works of St. Theophan the Recluse.
