Influence of the Domestic Political Situation in Russia on the Work of the Holy Council of the Russian Orthodox Church (1917–1918)

The article suggests author’s division into periods of the events that took place at the Holy Council of the Russian Orthodox Church (1917–1918). The dependence of the agenda, speeches and decisions on the revolutionary events that began shortly after the start of the Council was taken as criteria for highlighting the stages. The author analyzes the reasons that compelled participants of the Holy Council to respond promptly to some events and somewhat miss other ones. The question is raised about the illusions that the participants of the Council had regarding the Soviet regime in the first months of its existence. A conclusion is drawn on the merits of the Orthodox Church leaders who worked out solutions that contributed to the salvation of the Church in the extreme conditions of an atheistic state.
