Abstract

The object of research is the life path and pastoral ministry of the four Archpastors who headed the Orel diocese in the 19th – early 20th centuries. Orel Bishops: Nikodim (Bystritsky), Polikarp (Radkevich), Yuvenaly (Karyukovov), Iriney (Orda) and Yelets Bishop, vicar of the Orel diocese Mitrofan (Zemlyansky). Through the analysis of biographical facts, attempted to reconstruct the stages of life and ascetic service of the bishops during their stay at the Orel cathedra. During their hierarchal service, they proved themselves tireless educators and wise mentors of the flock, leaving behind a rich pastoral heritage and a significant mark on the spiritual life of the Orel diocese. Instructive is not only the lifetime fate of the saints, but also the ordeals that their honest remains underwent after their blessed death. The ascetics were buried in the Dormition Cathedral of the Orel Bishop’s House. In the 20-30s of the last century, the graves of the bishops suffered a tragic fate they were plundered. In 1994, the remains of the clergy were reburied on the territory of the renewed Assumption Monastery. Over the past three decades, in the conditions of post-Soviet Russia, efforts have been made to restore the memory of the spiritual ascetics of the past, pastors and archpastors, confessors of the Orthodox faith. The current tasks are as follows: reconstruction of the life path of the spiritual mentors of the Russian Orthodox Church, aimed at recreating a historically accurate picture showing the influence of the Church on the development of state society in our country; restoration of historical justice, trampled during the years of persecution of faith; fostering love for Orthodox pastors and mentors, which obliges us to restore desecrated shrines.
