A brief review of the history and current state of the ancient Oriental (Non-Chalcedonian) Churches

The problem of interpreting the Christological dogma (confession about the image of the union of two natures in Christ), which arose after the First Council of Chalcedon, led to the separation of the Churches that did not accept the Oros approved at the Council. Among the reasons for the separation were also political circumstances, largely caused by external events and not directly related to the dogma. The article briefly examines the history of the Churches that did not recognize the Council’s decision: the Coptic and Ethiopian, Eritrean, Syro-Jacobite, Armenian and Malankara, also called the Ancient Eastern Churches. Each of them has its own liturgical features and traditions. The pre-Chalcedonian Churches maintain Eucharistic communion only with each other. They do not have it with the Orthodox Churches. However, over the past decades, there has been a theological dialogue between the non-Chalcedonian East and Orthodoxy and a search for possible ways of rapprochement, which justifies the relevance of the undertaken research. According to the author of the article, the possibility of dialogue is largely determined by the common early Christian and patristic heritage. The current position of Christians in the Middle East plays its role: the daily confession of one’s faith in often hostile conditions can be the basis for studying the essence of the theological features and practical traditions of the Ancient Eastern Churches.
