Sermon as a form of pastoral communication with the flock: the case of the archpastoral ministry of Metropolitan Antony (Bloom)

The article is devoted to the Orthodox sermon, examined in the context of the communicative function of the language in order to determine the most effective ways of interaction between the pastor and the flock. The study is based on the assertion of the universality of language in the process of social communication. The sermon is the foundation of religious communication, so its language must be understandable to all interacting parties. The paper defines the role of preaching as a form of pastoral dialogue with the flock as illustrated by the archpastoral ministry of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh (Bloom). Using the method of modeling, systemic and contextual analysis, the key aspects of the communicative function of the language are studied, the importance of the sermon as a personal testimony of the pastor in the context of parish communication is noted. The results of the study show that preaching as a means of communication is relevant at all times, as it is based on the eternal Truth. The author emphasizes that the construction of any communication must take into account the properties of the linguistic sign. The use of these properties helps the preacher to form and develop interaction with the addressee of the sermon at the level of the heart and will, which stimulates positive responses from the flock. The success of a sermon directly depends on how the shepherd’s testimony about the Truth is combined with his life.
