Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of oral apostolic tradition, which was perceived, or could be perceived, by ancient church authors as an addition to the Holy Scriptures. Three types of sources of this kind are considered: agrapha (sayings of the Lord), oral “traditions of the elders” and apocrypha. The purpose of the article is an attempt to establish the nature of the reception by church authors of the pre-Nicene period of information from these sources. To achieve this goal, a review of the most significant evidence from the agrapha, “traditions of the elders” and apocrypha was made, an analysis was made of references and evaluations of these testimonies in the writings of the holy fathers of the Church, and an attempt was made to establish the ways in which such “traditions” entered the general Church Tradition. An analysis of the sources shows that neither the apostolic authority, nor antiquity, nor the personal authority of the custodian of local traditions was sufficient for their entry into the general Church Tradition. The examples considered in the article demonstrate that the process of reception of the oral apostolic tradition is characterized as organic and intuitive. According to the author, it was ultimately not connected with the will of individual church
leaders, but depended on the action of the Church as a whole.
