Liturgical tradition of the Valaam Monastery: from 1989 to present

The object of study in the work is modern liturgical practice of the Valaam Monastery in its connection with the traditions of the era of Old Valaam. The first Valaam monks, who revived the monastery at the end of the 20th century, sought to get as close as possible to the fulfillment of the liturgical Regulations, following the example of their predecessors. For about fifteen years, they succeeded in many ways. Recently there have been changes in liturgical practice. Basically, they touched on the daily cycle, the general brotherly rule, to a greater extent. The author analyzes the problem of reducing the services of the Valaam Monastery in the modern period.
Using the comparative historical method, the article compares the liturgical practice of the Valaam Monastery in the first years after the resumption of monastic life in it and after the mid-2000s, when changes were made to the service. Using the principle of objectivity, the author describes the problems faced by the monastery in its liturgical life. The article is based on the materials of personal conversations with witnesses and participants in the revival of the monastery. In conclusion, the author discusses the problem of incomplete compliance of modern worship with the rules of the Typikon, relying on the ascetic reasoning of the holy fathers and ascetics of piety. It is emphasized that, despite the reductions, the liturgical services of the Valaam monastery largely retain the statutory order and the meaning of the parts of the daily circle, its structure.
