The image of the revolution in I.A. Bunin’s prose in respect of the aspect of Christian Spiritual culture (based on selected stories of the 1920s)

The article is concerned with the study of the revolution perception in I. A. Bunin’s prose in the biblical context. I.A. Bunin’s short stories created in the 1920s, which became the artistic embodiment of the writer’s reflections on the Russian revolution, were studied by the author. In fiction, as well as in journalistic works about the Russian revolution, I. A. Bunin uses basic elements of Christian verbal culture: biblical and liturgical allusions and quotations. In this regard, descriptive, motive, stylistic and mythological methods of research were applied in this work. A comparative analysis of thematically related stories and philosophical and journalistic works of I. A. Bunin was carried out. As a result of the study, it is shown that the biblical context of the studied works sets a scale for understanding revolutionary events as part of Sacred History – the history of man’s relationship with God. The present historical moment is perceived as a crisis: in the portraits of the characters in the studied short stories, various manifestations of the spiritual illness of a person at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries can be traced. The main features of this disease (egocentrism, unbelief, mediocrity, cruelty, madness, rationalism) coincide with the picture presented in the Cursed Days and complement it. The same applies to the positive side of worldview, namely Bunin’s ideals of beauty and human dignity: descriptions of beautiful nature, architecture, and people occupy an important place in his stories, often coinciding in emotional tone and form with diary entries.
The study demonstrates how I.A. Bunin’s stories correlate with his philosophical and journalistic works about the revolution in the ideological and figurative spheres. It is revealed that the ethical and aesthetic constants of I.A. Bunin’s works are undergoing a transformation in terms of expression within the framework of other artistic forms of prose, however, in essence, remain the same.
