Theological and polemical activities of metropolitan of Kyiv Silvestr (Kosovo) in the context of formation and development of religious thoughts in the Western Russian lands in the 17th century

The subject of research in the work is the theological and polemical activity of the Metropolitan of Kyiv Sylvester (Kosovo) in the context of thedevelopment of Orthodox religious thought in the 17th century in Western Russian lands. The relevance of the study is due to the debatable aspects of the formation of theological views in the Western Russian lands as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The purpose of the work is to identify the ideas underlying the formation of the phenomenon of Western Russian theology, based on the analysis of theological views of Metropolitan Sylvester (Kosov), as well as to assess the debatable aspects of his theology. Using the principle of historicism and general scientific methods, the author studied apologetic and scientific-theological activities of Metropolitan Sylvester (Kosovo). In the work, the author draws attention to the versatility and complexity of interfaith relations in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the declaration of the Brest Church Union in 1596. The article examines the influence of various theological doctrines on the development of religious thought and the historical and cultural development of the Western Russian ethnos. The author studies the controversy around the theology of Metropolitan Sylvester (Kosov) and reveals erroneous judgments made in previous studies in the context of the discourse of the two historical and cultural worlds of the Slavs–Slavia Orthodoxa (Greek-Slavonic) and Slavia Latina (Latin-Slavic). As a result of the study of the theological works of Metropolitan Sylvester (Kosovo), a modern and objective view of scientific and theological activities of Metropolitan Sylvester is proposed, his orthodox position is substantiated and his significant contribution to the preservation of Orthodoxy in the Western Russian lands in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is emphasized.
