The identity of Russian folk Orthodox religiosity in connection with the Pre-Christian spiritual heritage of the Ancient Slavs

The article is devoted to the study of the most important features of Russian folk Orthodox religiosity, rooted in the pre-Christian history of the existence of the Eastern Slavs. The aim of the work is to identify the ideas underlying the formation of the peculiarity of Orthodoxy in the Russian tradition, as well as to give a theological assessment of the relevant folk beliefs and religious practices.
The author draws attention to the most striking archaic idea associated with the reverent attitude of the Russian people to the earth, which is due to the specifics of the Old Slavic perception of the category of holiness, which goes back to the Proto-Indo-European understanding of holiness as an excess of vitality and fertility. Based on various linguistic studies, the author identifies
the typological characteristics of the national Orthodox attitude to holiness. Using examples from modern folk spiritual culture, the author shows the significance and relevance for Russian people of many strict prohibitions on agricultural work on the most important church holidays and strict observance of customs related to the consecration of vegetation and the handling of bread.
In close relation with the veneration of the earth, there is also a special attention of the Russian person to the memory of deceased ancestors, as evidenced, in particular, by the abundance of days of commemoration of the deceased in the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, as indicates the author of the article. The preservation of the body after death and the related issue of veneration of imperishable remains as holy relics is also an echo of the archaic ideas of the ancient Slavs. As a result of the research, the main national peculiarities in the perception of the most important Christian ideas are formulated.
