Abstract

The object of research in the work is the process of formation of the system of spiritual education in Russia in the 18th century. By means of a comparative historical method, it was revealed that initially the Catholic model was taken as the basis for the formation of spiritual education in Russia. The article analyzes the strengthening of the influence of Protestant theologians, which was noted by the end of the 18th century. The author also traces how the trends associated with Russia's attempts to extend its influence to the Greek territories conquered by Turkey influenced the formation of spiritual education. It is concluded that as a result of these processes, interest in the Greek language increased in the theological schools of Russia, and there was also a transition to teaching in Russian. Thus, the basis was formed for the further development of spiritual education and the strengthening of its interest in the patristic tradition. As a result of the study, it is shown that in the 18th century Russia was characterized by a sharp class division between secular and spiritual education, although the latter became the cradle of Russian education as a whole. Pragmatism and Latinization associated with the reforms of Peter the Great slowed down for a long time the formation in Russia of its own nationally oriented spiritual and educational system, the beginnings of which appeared only at the end of the 18th century.
