St. Theophan the Recluse on the spirit of liberty in religious educational institutions during his rectorship at St. Petersburg Theological Academy (1857-1859)

The time when St. Theophan the Recluse was rector of St. Petersburg Theological Academy (1857–1859) falls at the beginning of the era of Great Reforms. This period completed his many years of service in the educational field and preceded his episcopal ministry at the Tambov (1859–1863) and Vladimir departments (1863–1866). During the dissemination of the ideas of freethinking and unbelief, the head of the educational institution was faced with the task not only of organizing the educational process, but also of educating students, future priests. The article examines the activities of St. Theophan as a spiritual mentor of youth, pastor and teacher. The main views of the saint on the issues of countering the spread of ideas of freethinking are revealed on the basis of the
analysis of the “Letter of the spiritual father to the confused by the speeches of freethinkers”, which was included in the collection “A Warning against being carried away by the spirit of the Present time” (1858). On February 17, 1859, during the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, St. Theophan uttered the program word, in which determined the specifics of spiritual education and the vectors of its further development. During the period of great social transformations, St. Theophan, with his extensive educational activities, exerted a great influence on the minds and souls of people, thereby influencing the modern era.
