Perception of the revolution in I. A. Bunin’s prose (based on material from the book Cursed Days): biblical context

The article is devoted to the study of apocalyptic motives and biblical allusions in I. A. Bunin’s philosophical and journalistic work “Cursed Days”, characterizing it as the author's subjective evidence of the revolutionary time. The book by I. A. Bunin is considered in the context of the centuries-old Christian tradition in Russian literature, as well as in the context of the eschatologism of Russian literature of the 19th – early 20th centuries. With the help of descriptive, motif, stylistic and mythological methods of research, the work reveals a specific vision by I. A. Bunin of the essence of the “godless forces” operating in revolutionary Russia: the semes of obscenity, ugliness, depravity, mediocrity, hypocrisy, lies, spiritual and physical death. The semantic rows testify to the total rejection by I. A. Bunin of the Bolshevik power at all levels – everyday, moral, aesthetic. The author of the article emphasizes that the writer perceived the revolution as a phenomenon not so much of a political as of a spiritual order, through the prism of a religious worldview. As a result of the study, it is shown that the Russian revolution is comprehended by I. A. Bunin in negative biblical eschatological categories – as the onset of the kingdom of Antichrist, the time of God's wrath, the destruction and trampling of genuine moral ideals and the beautiful culture of prerevolutionary Russia.
