The article continues a series of publications devoted to the study of the teachings of St. Theophan the Recluse about man in the context of modern humanitarian knowledge. The purpose of this work is to define the concepts of health and pathology of a human personality from a spiritual point of view. The author explicates the teaching of St. Theophan the Recluse about the spiritual life of a person, using modern categorical apparatus of the humanities. The relevance of this study is revealed in the correct understanding of what is really painful and what is a healthy manifestation of the human soul in relation to the conditions of wide popularization of secular psychological knowledge. It is emphasized that the anthropology of St. Theophan makes it possible to give a theological answer to current questions of society about the spiritual component of human existence. Saint Theophan uses the terms “Christian man” and “sinner man” to express the concepts of health and illness of a person. The Vysha ascetic defines spiritual health in the natural aspect as the harmony of the spirit, soul and body of a person, as well as the cognitive (mind), active (will) and feeling (heart) forces of the soul, and in the personal aspect - the ability of the individual to prudent and free activity.
