Composition and stylistic peculiarities of Russian hagiographic literature of the 19th century

The object of study in the work is the phenomenon of the hagiographical canon, which, due to the influence of theological and literary critical thought of the 19th century, was transformed from the classical ancient Russian hagiography into a more modern biography (with features of a biographical and artistic work). Through a comparative compositional and stylistic analysis, the traditional structure of the hagiographic work is revealed, designed to present the ideal image of the holy ascetic in the literary realities of the 19th century, which began to lose relevance. The author reveals compositional changes in the texts of the lives of the saints, gives examples of formulations that exclude the use of a "template" about the pious childhood and youth of the saint in case of little known or lack of biographical facts. It is noted that the changes that have arisen have had an impact on the church-religious style of narration, but have not affected the semantic spiritual and moral content of the texts. Critical remarks of church leaders, theologians and literary critics of the 19th century, such as Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov), Archbishop Filaret (Gumilyevsky), S.P. Shevyrev, are used as arguments. As a result of the study, the compositional and stylistic features that determined the transformation of the hagiographic canon in the context of the literary trends of the 19th century were identified and characterized. Constructive criticism of the biographies of the saints led to a change in the compositional structure, focusing on confirmed biographical data about the saint and his real merits. In turn, the church-religious, scientific and artistic styles integrated into the hagiographic language format contributed to the emergence of a special form of the hagiographic genre.
