Peculiarities of application of the inductive method in the construction of a sermon

The article discusses theoretical foundations and compositional features of a sermon built on the basis of the inductive method compared to the traditional model of homiletic works of deductive type. The main typological properties of inductive preaching are formulated: dialogics, actualization of Holy Scripture for listeners and discursivity. Among the advantages of such a construction of a pastoral word, the authors of the article highlight the establishment of a closer contact between the pastor and the flock, the activation of attention and stimulation of the mental activity of listeners, a deeper understanding of the gospel truths and the foundations of the doctrine of the faith by transferring the climax to the end of the speech. The peculiarities of the composition of the inductive sermon are revealed in the article on two examples: the words of Peter the Apostle addressed to the Jews on the day of Pentecost (Acts. 2, 14–42), and the archpastoral word of St. Theophan the Recluse «In the week of the fourteenth after Pentecost» (August 28, 1860), addressed to the Tambov flock in connection with the fires that befell the Tambov province. Based on the conducted research, the authors come to the conclusion that the inductive method of constructing a sermon in combination with other methods of problem-solving: question-and-answer constructions, rhetorical questions, the method of analysis – allows it to be effectively used in modern pastoral practice.
