Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the most significant historical processes in the history of theological education in Russia in the 19th century – the enact ment of the Statute of theological seminaries of 1884. The purpose of the article is to analyze the general course of the reform, as well as highlight the activities of the rector of Vologda Theological Seminary, Archpriest Pyotr Losev, to improve secondary theological education during the reform period. The publication provides an analysis of the main provisions of the Statute, and also traces the features of its introduction in Vologda Theological Seminary. The main sources used were the All-Subject Report of the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod K. P. Pobedonostsev for 1884, as well as the report of the Auditor of the Educational Committee I. K. Zinchenko following the results of the revision of Vologda Theological Seminary, carried out in 1885–1886. Based on the results of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that the introduction of the new Statute in Vologda Theological Seminary passed quite quickly, but did not entail significant changes. One of the negative consequences of the reform was the removal of the teaching staff from participation in the educational process, which negatively affected the moral level of seminarians, as well as the quality of education and served as the basis for protest moods in the late 19th – early 20th centuries.
