Abstract

The article explores the worship life of the Valaam Monastery from its restoration in 1717 after a century of desolation to the abbacy of St. Nazarius (Kondratiev; 1782–1801). The annual liturgical cycle, the issue of the veneration in the monastery of its founders – saints Sergius and Herman, the cell rule of the inhabitants are considered in detail. The sources used are materials from Russian archives and digitized manuscripts from the archive of Old Valaam, stored in the New Valaam Monastery and in the Orthodox
Church Museum of Finland (Kuopio). The available fragmentary information to some extent sheds light on the liturgical life of the Valaam monastery, shows tendencies relevant for further time. Restored after a century of devastation, the Valaam monastery adopted the liturgical traditions of the Kirill-Belozersk monastery, to which it belonged to until 1736. Many churches and sketes under St. Nazarius and afterwards in the 19th century were named after the feasts and saints, in whose honor monastery altars and chapels were consecrated during the period under review. The veneration of the founders of the Valaam monastery in the 18th
century found its manifestation gradually, although their memory over the time of the desolation of Valaam had been preserved, at least, in the Tikhvin and Kirill-Belozersk monasteries. When carrying out the cell rule in the monastery, they used ancient, including pre-reform, successions. New printed publications were gradually acquired from central printing houses. In conclusion, the motives characteristic of the worship life of the Valaam monastery in the 18th century are summarized, which will be relevant subsequently.
