Abstract

The problem of overcoming the Old Believer schism, which was significant for the pre-revolutionary history of the Russian state and the Church, is raised in the article. One of the participants in its decision was monasticism. To study the monastic activity in this context the author refers to the missionary experience of the famous holy ascetic of the Perm diocese—the Monk Martyr Archimandrite Varlaam (Konoplev), who at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries headed the Belogorsky St. Nicholas Missionary Monastery, which became the spiritual center of the Ural region. The relevance of the research is determined by the fact that today the theme of the anti-schismatic monastic mission is under-researched and its study on the example of the service of one of the outstanding pre-revolutionary monastic missionaries is useful for enriching the accumulated missionary experience of the Church and strengthening the ideals of monastic missionary service. The author for the first time enters into scientific circulation  a number of unpublished archival sources devoted to the Belogorsky Monastery and its superior. As a result of the study of the main directions of missionary service of the Belogorsky Monastery and statistical analysis, which indicate the number of those joining the Orthodox Church on the White Mountain, the conclusion is made about the success of the missionary activity of Father Varlaam and the monastery headed by him. The author concludes that the missionary service of the Monk Martyr Varlaam was fully suited to the demands of modern church’s anti-schismatic politics. And at the same time, the main way to attract the Old Believers to the Church fence was the reverent fulfilment of the Chart of Church combined with the righteous life of Father Varlaam according to the Gospel commandments of love, humility and meekness.
