Influence of Saint Augustine’s ideas on theological works of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 18th century

The purpose of this article is to trace the influence of theological concepts and ideas of Saint Augustine on representatives of spiritual literature of the Russian Orthodox Church of the 18th century. The study examines the theological opinion of Saint Augustine and its reflection in Russian theology of the 18th century regarding the following concepts: love of God, the Fall,
the image of God in man, the relationship of the will of God with the will of man, the doctrine of grace. The major research method is comparative analysis. The work examines spiritual heritage of Russian church authors of the 18th century from the perspective of the presence in their written works and sermons of the theological views of St. Augustine, comprehended and developed in line with the Orthodox doctrine and patristic heritage. In particular, it is noted that in the Iliotropion, St. John of Tobolsk proposes using the Augustinian approach to prayer. Among the ideas accordant with Blessed Augustine, are the ones contained in the works of the Right Reverend Theophan (Prokopovich), such as predestination, the opposition of God and creation, reasoning about the image of God, about filial and slavish love for God. Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk also agreed with Augustinian ideas of contrasting love for the Creator and creation, and focused on the nature of sin and its consequences for man. The relevance of the research undertaken is due to the fact that the study of the influence of St. Augustine’s ideas (Augustinism) on the ideas of Russian Orthodox authors of the 18th century allows us to more deeply understand the features of Russian theology in the context of cultural, social and religious
transformations of that era. In conclusion, the author claims that the reception of some theological ideas of St. Augustine by representatives of Russian theology of the 18th century had a positive effect in the form of expanding the theological tools
of the New Age.
