Abstract

The object of the study is the tradition of studying Christianity in the North Caucasus. The subject of the work is historiographical sources devoted to the study of Christianity in the North Caucasus. Using the comparative historical method, the territory of the spread of Christianity in the North Caucasus until the 14th century was identified and the term “Christianization” was analyzed in relation to this locus. The role of such centers of Christianity as Byzantium and Georgia is emphasized, and the features of the adoption of Christianity by the peoples of the North Caucasus are also shown. The relevance of the study is dictated by the need to structure all existing works on the history of Christianity in the North Caucasus in connection with terminological discrepancies and
the emergence of new data on the topic under study, refuting or confirming previous ones. After analyzing the literature, it is concluded that the North Caucasus in the period under study (from the 1st to the 14th centuries) included the territories of Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Chechnya, the south of the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, and Dagestan. The concept of Christianization is formulated as a sociocultural process associated with the penetration and spread of the Christian faith, the establishment of its principles and values through the formation of legislation under the influence of the upper strata of society and reflection in the cultural tradition, which leads to a change in the worldview and way of life of the population. The features of the process of Christianization are considered using the example of the territory of the North Caucasus.
