Abstract

The history of the Coptic Church begins at the end of the 6th century and is associated with the confrontation between the indigenous population of Egypt and the Greek-speaking elite of Alexandria. The article describes historical, dogmatic, liturgical, cultural, everyday and other traditional features of the Ancient Eastern Pre-Chalcedonian Church. Currently, the Coptic Church is the second largest Eastern Non-Chalcedonian Church, after it granted autocephaly to the Ethiopian (1956) and Eritrean (1994)
Churches. The relevance of the research is emphasized by the theological dialogue that has been ongoing over the past decades between the non-Chalcedonian East and Orthodoxy with the aim of finding possible ways of rapprochement. Using the comparative historical method, the author showed that, despite the lack of Eucharistic communion with the Orthodox Churches and the preservation of some features of Monophysitism in the teaching, the experience of the Coptic Church as one of the branches of Christianity is interesting. Monasticism, concentrated in the monasteries of the Eastern and Western deserts of Egypt, enjoys special respect among the Coptic flock. Cultural approach was important for the study, which allowed us to draw a conclusion about the influence of the Muslim world on the traditions, culture and life of the Copts.
