Apologetic works of the Holy Martyr Arkady (Ostalsky): rhetorical aspect

Apologetics, or Fundamental Theology, is one of the main subjects of seminary education and constitutes theoretical knowledge base of a clergyman called upon to defend the Orthodox faith. The relevance of this aspect of the activity of priests and all faithful children of the Church is determined by the need, in the words of the Apostle, “to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and reverence” (1 Pet. 3:15), to give a solid foundation for the Gospel and the Church teachings to people leaving Christ. Consequently, at every stage of life of the Church the question arises of what knowledge an apologist must have in order to defend and substantiate the Revelation of the Lord. In this connection, it seems relevant to study the apologetic experience of the new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church. The purpose of the research is to study the effective methods of argumentation that the Hieromartyr Arkady (Ostalsky) used in his archpastoral and missionary activities. As a result of the analysis of the “apologetic circle” of the holy martyr Arkady (Ostalsky), i.e. the sections into which his main theology is divided: historical, ontological, moral and natural science types of argumentation were identified. In the modern world, success in preaching requires not only moral or biblical experience, but also philosophical and scientific experience. Hieromartyr Arkady was one of the first to direct his apologetic thought to science. Among the methods of constructing reasoning, the dialogical form predominates (rhetorical dialogue with the reader or with an imaginary atheist opponent). Another characteristic feature of the construction of texts is the form of notes, which allows you to remember the maximum amount of information thanks to a concise, clear and precise presentation of thoughts, which indicates the talent of the bishop-apologist. As a result, the study showed the high effectiveness of scientific argumentation in missionary activity in the twentieth century and the possibility of actively applying this experience at the present stage.
