Abstract

The subject of the study is the practice of regulating the performance of regular divine services in the parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church during the years of the primacy of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Pimen from 1971 to 1990. The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that studies of the development of the statutory order of regular worship in the Russian Orthodox Church mainly affect the pre-synodal period of church history, while the history of Russian worship in the second half of the twentieth century remains insufficiently studied. This article uses methods of comparison of liturgical and church legal sources, as well as the principle of historicism, with the help of which the continuity of approaches to the organization of worship in the twentieth century is shown. During the period under study, the activities of the Publishing Department of the Moscow Patriarchate were of particular importance in the issue of regulation of statutory worship. It is noted that in the 1970–1980s, this institution performed, among other functions, the Synodal Calendar and Liturgical Commission, which, due to the specifics of church-state relations in Soviet times, could not openly carry out its activities. It is indicated that thanks to the release of the “Orthodox Liturgical Collection” and the multi-volume edition “Handbook of the Clergyman”, the ban on the annual printing of “Liturgical Instructions” was somewhat compensated, and parishes were provided with general instructions for the statutory order of regular worship and liturgical texts in a minimal amount. It has been proven that the subse quent publication of the “Green Mena” and the collection “Services of the Feast of the Baptism of Rus’” added a significant volume of hymnographic texts to Russian saints to the corpus of liturgical books. The paper concludes that the regulation of liturgical practice from 1971 to 1990 was carried out within the framework of the publication of liturgical, calendar, liturgical and reference publications with a focus on the liturgical heritage of the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of 1917–1918.
