Pühtitsa Assumption Convent in the context of relations between Church and state in Estonia (1917–1940)

The Pühtitsa Assumption Convent, the largest in the Baltics, was founded in the reign of Emperor Alexander III on the initiative of the Estonian governor, Prince S. V. Shakhovsky. The formation of the monastery coincided with the period of the rise of Estonian national consciousness and later with the formation of the Estonian Church and the opening of the Estonian Orthodox See. The article deals with the difficulties of the existence of the convent during the years of the civil war and epidemics on the territory of independent Estonia, in an atmosphere of distrust towards the Russian clergy and parishioners, partial confiscations of monastic property. The monastery, convent during the years of persecution of the Church in the USSR, managed, on the one hand, to restore economic activity, on the other hand, to become a significant spiritual center of Russian Orthodoxy, attracting many prominent representatives of emigration not only from Estonia, but from the entire Russian diaspora, the Russian Student Christian Movement (it hosted the 3rd and 5th Congresses of the RSCM in 1930 and 1932). Until her death in 1939, the widow of Prince Shakhovsky lived in the monastery. After 1921, the Pühtitsa Convent (women’s labor community) was under the jurisdiction of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church under the leadership of Metropolitan Alexander (Paulus). Until 1940, he and Abbess Joanna maintained constructive relations with the state. The article uses materials from the archives of the Baltic States, primarily the State Archives of Estonia.
