The article opens a series of publications devoted to examining the teachings of St. Theophan the Recluse about human personality in the context of modern humanitarian knowledge. To describe the anthropology of St. Theophan, the categorical apparatus of personality psychology has been used. The language of the saint's presentation allows psychological knowledge to be taken as a common denominator in the discussion between secular psychology and theological anthropology. This kind of discourse is very relevant today, as it is aimed at the interaction of secular and religious Christian knowledge about a person. This article examines the issues of structure, motivation and development of a person in the theology of St. Theophan. The structure of the personality in the anthropology of the Vyshensky ascetic is presented in the form of a trichotomy: spirit, soul and body. Personality motivation raises the question of what the initial attraction of a person as a spiritual being is; what the purpose of his being is. The personality development category describes the factors that influence the growth and formation of a person as a free personality. A person develops not only physiologically and psychologically, which is reflected in developmental psychology, but also spiritually goes through certain stages of his formation. The research results can be used in the theoretical and practical activities of Orthodox theologians and psychologists.
