The divine liturgy of the Byzantine rite

The article examines the history and forms of the main service of the Orthodox Church – the Divine Liturgy of the Byzantine rite. The purpose of the article is a comprehensive review of the liturgy in a historical, theological and dogmatic way. It outlines the role and place of the Eucharist in the divine service of the Church, represents a brief history and usage of the term “liturgy”, and gives a brief overview of the development of the Byzantine rite. The adoption of the Great Church’s (the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Constantinople) Charter determined the development of the Byzantine church rite as the main one for more than 15 centuries. After the codification of the written language, associated with the appearance of the first printed publications (XVI century), the forms of the celebration of the liturgy practically do not change. According to the sources, in the Byzantine liturgical tradition, the rite of the full Eucharistic liturgy, inscribed by St. Basil the Great, performed on Sundays and holidays. The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom took the place of the main divine service in the post-iconoclastic period (XI–XII centuries, according to Greek manuscripts). On the basis of a comparative analysis of anaphors, it represents a conclusion about the more detailed nature of the sequence of St. Basil the Great with the obvious commonality of their semantic structure, reflecting the main dogmatic truths of the Orthodox Church.
