Ancient Russian legends of the Mother of God: main issues of generic, thematic and compositional identification

Old Russian literature is an important part of the world cultural heritage, where a large number of diverse genres have been accumulated. Hagiographic literature is of particular interest to scientists. The attention of researchers is drawn to thematic ideas, plot lines, peculiarities of the compositional structure of a text of a particular genre category, characteristic topoi that define the boundaries and scheme of the narrative. However, a wide range of legends of the Mother of God often remains on the periphery of research. The stories dedicated to the miraculous icons of the Mother of God cause difficulties in studying. This is due, first of all, to thematic diversity, the lack of a compositional canon and a deep connection with other literary genres. Until now, there is no consensus in the scientific community regarding a term that could designate a collection of similar literary writings of Ancient Rus’. The main features that would make it possible to characterize the genre of the works of the Mother of God are not clearly defined. This article identifies the main problems faced by the researcher of ancient Russian legends about the Mother of God icons, defines the general characteristics of this kind of works and proposes an appropriate term for further genre identification. In conclusion, the most effective, in the author’s opinion, approach to the study of the works of the Mother of God is presented, bringing research in this area into an interdisciplinary context.
