Abstract

Conceiving the national idea is a topical issue of present-day Russian social thought. It borders social, political, philosophic and religious constructs. The question whether Orthodoxy can be such an idea is under discussion. One of the answers “no” is given not for Russia’s being a multinational state but for seemingly “non-social” character of Christian doctrine. Its key element is the idea of one’s purely personal responsibility and salvation understood in transcendentally-­mystical dimension whereas the national idea implies fulfilling a certain global collective terrestrial and immanent project socially, economically, politically and culturally. The article aims at multifaceted grounding the thesis that Christian worldview, evidently characterized by existential and transcendental essence, has a clear social and immanent content. The latter can be seen only without secular, materialistic, atheist, science-­oriented and positivist distorted caricatured interpretations. Thus it is Orthodox Christianity that has necessary potential to become the national idea that would be uniting, preserving, protecting, heightening and spiritualizing for present-day Russian society.
