The genesis of the Protestant doctrine on the universal priesthood of believers

The idea that any Christian, by the fact of their baptism, is already a priest lies at the heart of the Protestant understanding of the priesthood. The purpose of this article is to analyze the process of the birth of this Protestant doctrine. Thus, the object of research is Protestant ecclesiology, the subject of research is the Protestant doctrine of the universal priesthood. The article consistently examines the traces of the idea of a universal priesthood in Christian sects of the 11th–14th centuries, in the writings of Wycliffe and Hus, the predecessors of the Reformation, and, finally, examines the design of this doctrine in the writings of Luther and Melanchthon during the years of the Reformation. The author comes to the conclusion that the prerequisites for the doctrine of the universal priesthood were the struggle against the papacy, against the immorality of Catholic priests, as well as the idea that the degree of grace received directly depends on the moral character of the priest. A chronological
examination of the birth of the idea of a universal priesthood in the writings of Luther and Melanchthon showed that this idea was adopted by the reformers largely by force, when all hopes of reaching an acceptable agreement with Rome disappeared. At the same time, in the future, the Lutherans came, in fact, to a practice similar to Rome, when pastors are appointed by “senior members” of the Church, taking into account the opinion of the local church community.
