Compositional and stylistic peculiarities of the “Sermon on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross” by St.Tikhon of Zadonsk

The object of this study is the sermon of St.Tikhon of Zadonsk, delivered by him before the Voronezh flock on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. The purpose of the study is to identify the compositional and stylistic originality of St.Tikhon’s sermons on the example of the “Sermon on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross”. The relevance of the work is due to the fact that the knowledge of what methods and techniques the saint used in his “Sermon…” will allow us to establish possible patterns in the entire cycle of his sermons with their further study. The article gives a description of the historical context of St. Tikhon’s preaching activity. The author indicates the problem-thematic range of all the homiletic works of the Zadonsk ascetic and, with the help of compositional and stylistic analysis, determines the place of the “Sermon on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross” in the presented thematic structure. The work examines the sermons of St. Tikhon from the point of view of the main methods of homiletics: introduction, method of reasoning, appeal. As a result, the author determines the meaning and purpose of all the techniques used by the saint. Each sermon of St. Tikhon is a unique work, with a special approach to the explication of the author’s thought. The results of the complex analysis carried out will help to determine the rhetorical and compositional-stylistic features of St. Tikhon’s homiletic heritage.
