Abstract

The article presents a methodology for introducing schoolchildren to the patristic heritage on the example of the iconography and text of the book “The Ladder” by St. John of the Ladder. The idea that the educational potential of the works of the Holy Fathers of the Church has not lost its significance in spiritual and moral education and the formation of the personality of modern schoolchildren is being updated. The paper presents the experience of conducting classes on the consideration of iconography and the ancient text of the “Ladder” of St. John of the Ladder with schoolchildren of different age groups: elementary school, grades 5–8 and high school students; the expediency of referring to the text of the “Ladder” and its iconography as didactic aids that contribute to the education of children and adolescents in relation to virtues as necessary personality traits is shown. The article includes brief information about St. John of the Ladder, a methodology for working with iconography and ancient text for different levels of perception, a recommended video series of icons “The Ladder of John of the Ladder” from different eras, questions for schoolchildren and some of their answers, tasks for building their own ladders of virtues. To develop a methodology for getting to know the text of the “Ladder”, retrospective and lexical-semantic analysis of texts, systematization of didactic material on the key issue of developing a life strategy as climbing one's own ladder were used. As a result of the study, it was found that understanding the text of the “Ladder” and its iconography motivates schoolchildren to self-education, analysis of their own life, internal work to overcome shortcomings, and in high school to build a life perspective.
