Abstract

The relevance of the research topic is conditioned by the fact that 2022 is the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian emperor. The transformations of Peter the Great affected all spheres of public life and have not yet received an unambiguous assessment of historians due to their scale and courage. The article is devoted to a general description of the relationship between Emperor Peter I and the Russian Orthodox Church. With the help of narrative, historical and retrospective research methods, the paper shows the stages of the formation of church-state relations, which form the basis of the synodal system. Personal participation of Peter I in the ongoing reforms and his view of the ancient forms of church property management are noted. The author emphasizes the significance of these transformations for the spiritual life of society in the 18th–19th centuries. The work focuses on the episodes of the development of Tambov region, indirectly related to the activities of Peter I. During the construction of the Azov fleet, the sovereign's route from Moscow to Voronezh lay through Lipetsk, that is, Tambov land. The fate of the emperor's main comrade-inarms, Alexander Danilovich Menshikov, is connected with the Tambov region. In the possession of the “semi-power ruler” there were nine Tambov villages. Tambov diocese was formed during the period of church reforms in 1682. A resonant event that caused the abolition of Tambov see was the case of Bishop Ignatius. After the exile of the disgraced bishop, Tambov region did not enjoy the attention of Emperor Peter I.
