The article brings forth the problem of further scientific and philosophical comprehension of one of the topoi of the activity of St. Theophan the Recluse of Vyshensky - updating spiritual life and accomplishing ‘mental doing’. The prospect of transferring this renovation to modern life and the creation of its philosophical concept is proposed. The author notes that Saint Theophanes applied the spiritual experience of ancient monasticism to solve the problems of his era defacto from the state of an unwritten spiritual
narrative of Russian elders to the first version of scientific and theological systematics in soteriology, building the process of Orthodox tradition on a step-by-step basis.
