The image of an ideal Christian based onthe works of Saint John Chrysostom

The article is devoted to the ideas of St. John Chrysostom about the ideal Christian. The author describes the socio-political situation in Eastern Byzantium in the era when the saint lived and worked. The researcher draws attention to the difficulties of the existence of a new religion in the conditions of a pagan city, touches on the problem of the influence of official Byzantium, and in particular, the publication of imperial edicts, on the spread of Christianization. In the article, based on the symphony of the works of John Chrysostom, a classification of the qualities that, in the opinion of the saint, are necessary for a true Christian is made. The classification is based on the principle of dividing the qualities of a Christian into three groups. The first includes main positive qualities necessary for a Christian, the second includes negative ones that a Christian faces, and the third includes phenomena that have a neutral color and constantly surround a person in life. The paper uses a statistical method to analyze the number of references to each of the qualities of a Christian and how many essays the saint refers to these qualities. Depending on the number of references, a hierarchy of Christian qualities is formed in terms of significance and importance. Based on this hierarchy, the author comes to the conclusion that the most frequently mentioned, and, consequently, the most necessary qualities, according to John Chrysostom, are «mercy» and «love».
