Abstract

The article discusses the role of the personality of Joseph (Semashko), Metropolitan of Lithuania, in the process of reunification of Belarusian Uniates with the Russian Orthodox Church. The author looks at various stages of the personality formation of Metropolitan Joseph (Semashko): his childhood and family environment, family ties, education, a turning point in his worldview under the influence of Russian theological literature, his decision to join the Orthodox Church, vigorous efforts to prepare a general
reunion of Belarusian Uniates with the Orthodox Church, signing the Act of Reunification on February 12, 1839, and the significance of this event for the Belarusian people.
