Some Milestones of the Activities of Saint Theophan the Recluse at the Tambov Diocese (1859–1863)

Abstract

Saint Theophan's service in the Tambov Diocese did not last long, only four years - from July 5, 1859 to July 22, 1863, but even during this short time the saint managed to gain the universal deep love of the Tambov flock. In addition to outstanding human qualities, such as extraordinary meekness, rare delicacy, caring attention to the needs and requirements of each person, the archpastor was distinguished by great organizational talent and unremitting attention to all areas of diocesan life. His activities in Tambov were active and diverse. From the very first steps, its educational focus was felt, expressed in the observation of the educational and upbringing processes in the Tambov Theological Seminary, and in the foundation of the first diocesan periodical, and in the concern for the education of the daughters of the local clergy. In conclusion of the article, the author notes that this publication presents only a brief overview of some of the main areas of activity of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky, at the Tambov cathedra.
