In the Tambov Diocese, the founding of the diocesan gazette is associated with the name of Saint Theophan the Recluse. In 1859, Bishop Theophan was appointed to the Tambov See. Two years after his appointment, he managed to establish the publication of the Tambov Diocesan Gazette. The first issue was published in July 1861. Editorial duties were assigned to the pedagogical corporation of the Tambov Theological Seminary. The rector of the seminary was usually the editor of the gazette, and one of the teachers in holy orders was appointed as a censor. The Vedomosti were published weekly and until the 1870s were divided into two parts: the official part and the supplement. The official part printed decrees of the Holy Synod, orders of the Tambov Theological Consistory, reports of various societies, announcements, rank lists of students of theological educational institutions of the diocese, information about vacant priestly, deacon and psalm-breaker positions. The supplements printed sermons, articles of spiritual and moral, theological and church-historical content. The Tambov Diocesan Gazette was extremely popular among the clergy and laity, it not only provided information, but also educated, was a means of communication, a platform where one could express one's thoughts or exchange opinions.
