The practice of teaching the basics of icon painting and the analysis of the real state of icon painting creativity show that the process of acquiring the corresponding artistic skills should be based on the active and priority inclusion of special practical activities of students and be the most important link in the entire system of training an icon painter. The practical basis of the methodology for training a future icon painter is determined by the main, historically verified method - the copying method, which, in essence, is pure practice. As a result of the analysis, based on real pedagogical experience, the author found out that teaching the basics of icon painting through practical activity is an effective and necessary means in training a future icon painter at the initial stage of art education. Its main advantage is the activation of iconographic thinking, since the student begins (and is forced) to use the experience and skills gained in practice, and also sees the result of his icon painting education as if from the outside.
