The Society for the Care of the Blind Deaf-Mutes in Russia in the context of the activities of pre-revolutionary Orthodox brotherhoods

This article examines the history of the Society for the Care of the Blind Deaf-Mutes in Russia (hereinafter referred to as the Society), which existed from 1909 to 1917, and identifies the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in its development. Particular attention is paid to the interactions of the charitable organization with the Russian-Estonian Orthodox Parish of the Holy Martyr Isidore of Yuryev in St. Petersburg.
The relevance of this study is determined by the lack of systematic studies on the history of care for the deaf-blind in pre-revolutionary Russia and the insufficient study of the ecclesiastical and social aspects of this issue. The history of the Society itself is important precisely because the emergence of care for the disabled, although a private secular initiative, could not have occurred initially without the active participation of the Church. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time in historiography, the history of the Society for the Care of the Blind Deaf-Mutes in Russia is reconstructed and the role of the Church in its development is revealed.
The study utilizes a historical-prosopographical method (analyzing the biographies of the Society’s key figures, including Archpriest Pavel Kul-bush, the future Hieromartyr Platon of Revel), a historical-inductive method, and a content analysis of the Society’s annual reports for 1909-1915. The author reconstructs the Society’s organizational structure and financial mechanisms, and describes the educational and medical aspects of its activities in the context of its interactions with Orthodox fraternities and similar societies caring for children with limited communication with the outside world.
For the first time in Russian historiography, a comprehensive picture of the Society’s activities is presented. It is shown that, despite holding its founding meeting in an Orthodox church and the formal participation of the clergy in its leadership, the Society retained its secular character and fundamentally differed from traditional Orthodox fraternities in its lack of a religious or moral focus. It is established that, although financial support from the Church was significant, its practical work was primarily medical and social in nature, without a systemic religious component. It has been proven that the Society’s main achievement was the identification of the problem of deaf-blindness as a social phenomenon in Russia, which laid the foundation for subsequent systemic solutions during the Soviet period.
