The article continues a series of publications devoted to the Dormition Cathedral of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra and the work of the Moscow icon-painters A. S. and M. A. Rogozhkin. This paper introduces for the first time information about seven of the nine icons painted by M. A. Rogozhkin specifically for the pillars of the Dormition Cathedral in 1881-1882, which determines the scientific novelty of the study. Information about the other two icons painted by M. A. Rogozhkin was first published by L. A. Shitova in 2014.
Beginning in 1879, during the viceroyalty of Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin), a distinguished scholar, theologian, historian, and archaeographer, to the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, extensive renovations were carried out at the Dormition Cathedral. The Moscow iconographer M. A. Rogozhkin was invited to carry out these renovations. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the influence of the history of the cathedral’s construction and interior decoration on the iconography and use of the icons under study.
The use of historical, archival, iconographic, and comprehensive research methods allowed the author to trace the circumstances of M. A. Rogozhkin’s painting of the new pillar icons, the manner in which they were placed on the pillars from 1882 to the present, and to uncover the relationship between the cathedral’s interior decoration and the iconography of the images.
As a result of this study, the author was able to reconstruct the pillar complex of the Dormition Cathedral in the second half of the 19th century. A well-thought-out iconographic program was identified, reflecting the circumstances of the cathedral’s construction, the veneration of Saints Sergius and Nikon of Radonezh, and significant events in the history of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. The arrangement of icons on the pillars created a semantic space uniting the venerated images of the monastery and the patron saints of the royal house. The obtained results make a significant contribution to the study of 19th-century Russian ecclesiastical art and the interior decoration of the churches of the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.
