Chichikov and chichikovshchina: the problem of spiritual degradation of personality in Russian literature of the XIX century

The article presents an analytical review from the point of view of the Orthodox doctrine of the characters of Russian literature of the XIX century, reflecting various degrees of spiritual degradation of the individual. The author concludes that the image of Chichikov from the poem of N.V. Gogol's «Dead Souls» is a kind of archetype that contains the makings of all moral vices critically comprehended by Russian writers.
