Faith and nation in the ethnotheology of archpriest Dumitru Staniloae

The article examines the specificity of the views of archpriest Dumitru Stăniloae (1903–1993) on the issues of national identity in the era of “Greater Romania” (1918–1945) in the context of the combination of the Orthodox worldview, patriotism and statehood in the development of the ideological field of the concept of “Roumanism”. That is the aim of the research.The subject of the study is the relevant concepts, such as “personality”, “society”, “nation”, “state”, “Orthodoxy”, “Church”. The object of the study is the publications of Fr. D. Stăniloae in the edition named “Romanian Telegraph”. The topic of the article is understudied and therefore its consideration seems quite relevant for understanding the essence of ideological disputes in Europe in the interwar period (1918–1939). With the help of historical-biographical, descriptive and comparative methods, the work shows that the Romanian theologian perceived the “nation” in the context of the Divine plan for this or that people, and also as a projection of the historical memory formed in the implementation of the Providence of God about it. Being deeply rooted in the patristic tradition, Fr. D. Stăniloae argues that divine grace does not dissolve the specific qualities and powers of man and his national uniqueness. The theologian regarded the ethnic determination of the individual as something literally inalienable. For him, national quality is a common form of soul which, through cooperation with divine grace, is strengthened and enriched even more. The article gives opinions of Romanian and European scientists on the issues of Romanian ethnotheology. Certain conclusions about ontological, metaphysical and sacred character of the nation in the ethnotheology of Fr. D. Stăniloae are drawn in the article.
