Charitable activities of the Orthodox Church Brotherhoods in Stavropol Province in the 19th – early 20th centuries

The object of the research is the charitable activities of the Orthodox Church Brotherhoods in Stavropol province in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. During this period, various religious charitable organizations were created on its territory: sisterhoods, brotherhoods, parish guardianships, etc. The most fruitful was the activity of the Orthodox Church Brotherhoods. They were established on the initiative of bishops, clergy, civil authorities or active parishioners and helped to solve the problems of spiritual education, missionary service, the activities of diocesan social and educational institutions, material assistance to parishes and the clergy at the diocesan level. At the same time, the work in the brotherhoods increased the role of the laity. Using the principle of historicism, the comparative historical method and content analysis, the author studies the process of the emergence and functioning of church brotherhoods in Stavropol province based on the materials of the Stavropol Diocesan Gazette. The study focuses on the charitable activities of the Brotherhood of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir in the city of Stavropol. As a result of the study, it is shown that in Stavropol province in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries, the Orthodox Church Brotherhoods successfully carried out charitable activities, which qualitatively complemented the missionary, educational and social service of the Church. The inclusion of brotherhoods in the activities of the Church in the region opened up the prospect of influencing religious life of the population and was the key to success of church preaching through caring laity who are members of the Orthodox Brotherhoods.
