Based on rare archival materials, the article provides an overview of the activities of Archbishop Ioasaph (Zhurmanov) when he headed Tambov Department. The history of the construction of the Peter and Paul Church in Tambov is considered in detail. The author shows the difficulties that the archbishop faced and complicated relations between the Church and the state during this period of time, which was called "the Khrushchev persecution”. It took a lot of effort and patience to preserve what was restored from the opening day of the Tambov diocese.
