Exorcism: a brief analysis of the conceptual apparatus, history of the rite and current application practice

The article is devoted to the study of one of the religious rites, which is in demand in the parish environment. It is the so-called rite of exorcism referred to in the breviary as “Prayer service for the weak, overwhelmed by unclean spirits”. The purpose of the study is to determine the conformity of the current parish practice of exorcism with the teachings and canonical requirements of the Orthodox Church. In the work, the author defines the concepts of the terms “exorcism” and “demonic possession”, in connection with which he conducts a brief analysis of the encyclopedic terminology associated with this, considers the formation and development of this rite. The article assesses the impact of the Western ideology of consumption on the demand for a person to fulfill his or her spiritual needs, as a result of which the sacraments and rituals taught by the Orthodox Church can be perceived in a distorted form, as a commercial service, by paying for which you can get relief from accumulated psychological and family problems. The author comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to specify phenomenons of “exorcism” and “demonic possession” in order to unify the general church approach to both theological understanding of the problem and practical side of Christian participation in exorcisms.
