Abstract

The object of research in the work is the missionary service of Bishop Nicholas (Kasatkin) during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. The aggravation of relations between the Russian Empire and Japan at the beginning of the 20th century had a negative impact on the position of the Japanese Orthodox Church and led to information attacks by the Japanese press on the Russian Spiritual Mission with accusations of espionage ties with Russian services and hostility towards the Japanese imperial power.
Using the principle of historicism and the comparative historical method, the author shows the stages and areas of the missionary activity of St. Nicholas (Kasatkin) in retrospect and in the context of the current socio-political situation. The work focuses on the decision of the head of the Russian spiritual mission, Bishop Nicholas (Kasatkin), which played a key role in strengthening and stabilizing the position of Orthodoxy in the Land of the Rising Sun. The saint believed that the social service of the Japanese clergy to prisoners of war and the humane treatment of Russian prisoners by the Japanese would benefit the Japanese Orthodox Church and become one of the factors in bringing the two states closer together. As a result of the study, it is shown that the missionary activity of St. Nicholas (Kasatkin) during the war years, the decrees and decisions he adopted, the letters written, social work, including the care of prisoners of war, influenced the trust of the local population in Orthodoxy in general and the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in particular., thereby strengthening the authority of the Orthodox Church in Japan.
